Taxi and hire car drivers

What we do

Commercial Passenger Vehicle Victoria (CPVV) has established a dispute resolution process to manage disputes between taxi and hire car drivers and operators.

The Victorian Small Business Commission (VSBC) provides a mediation service to resolve taxi and hire car disputes under the Commercial Passenger Vehicle Industry Act 2017. When applying to the VSBC, a copy of a CPVV certificate should accompany your application.

For rideshare disputes, the VSBC can help small businesses to resolve matters under the Small Business Commission Act 2017. Find out more about how we can help gig workers.

How we can help

Taxi and hire car drivers and operators can access mediation through the VSBC only when:

  • the dispute is first referred to CPVV
  • CPVV has been unable to resolve the dispute
  • CPVV has issued a certificate to the parties within the past 30 days enabling the dispute to be referred to the VSBC or Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) for mediation.

If the dispute is referred to us and can’t be resolved, we can issue a certificate allowing the matter to be referred to VCAT. Mediation with the VSBC will cost $300 per party for each session.

There is no cost for assistance we provide over the phone or via email.

Legislation

Dispute resolution between taxi and hire car drivers and operators is conducted by the VSBC under the Commercial Passenger Vehicle Industry Act 2017. Dispute resolution between rideshare drivers and operators can be conducted by the VSBC under the Small Business Commission Act 2017.
